L'obiettivo e' quello di creare un Cyber Physical System di estensione metropolitana in cui sviluppare ed offrire servizi tipo: monitoraggio ambientale, mobilità intelligente e di energy management.


CAPACITÀ E COMPETENZE TECNICHE
Con computer, attrezzature specifiche, macchinari, ecc. Programmazione, gestione sistemi di calcolo, reti di calcolatori, sistemi wireless, IoT, GRID e Cloud computing.
Ha contribuito a realizzare i seguenti strumenti software:
• WebSPN: tool per lo studio delle reti di Petri non Markoviane che permette la soluzione analitica di modelli estremamente complessi
• MAP: piattaforma ad agenti mobili basata su Java e su meccanismi di sicurezza avanzati
• DAVID: server per video on demand basato su una architettura totalmente distribuita in grado di garantire prestazioni elevate e costi contenuti
• ArgoPerformance: tool grafico per l’analisi delle prestazione del software basato su UML
• GridVideo: una applicazione basata su Grid per offrire un server di video on demand virtuale.
• WHEREX: middleware per la realizzazione e gestione dell’Internet of Things (in seguito trasformato in prodotto commerciale da Inquadro srl)
• CLEVER: middleware per la realizzazione e gestione di infrastrutture di Cloud computing
• S4T: ambiente di sviluppo per Cyber-Physical Systems in grado di interconnettere l'Internet delle cose al Cloud.

L'attivita' scientifica e' rivolta principalmente allo studio dei sistemi di calcolo distribuiti e paralleli con particolare attenzione verso la modellazione delle prestazioni e dell'affidabilita', il networking, le architetture orientate ai servizi. Applicazioni specifiche sono state sviluppate sul network management e sulla gestione della qualita’ del servizio. Si e’ occupato di tematiche legate alla gestione della mobilità dell’utente ed alla sicurezza sia nelle reti wireless che ad hoc. Particolare enfasi viene attualmente dedicata allo studio dei sistemi di calcolo Grid e sul Cloud computing ed alla adozione di tali paradigmi per fornire servizi multimediali avanzati all’utente finale, avendo particolare riguardo alla realizzazione di servizi per le PMI e la Pubblica Amministrazione. Interesse specifico riguarda l'Internet delle cose ed i Cyber Physical Systems e le loro applicazioni. L’attivita’ di ricerca riguarda le seguenti aree tematiche:

• Affidabilita' e tolleranza ai guasti
• Internet delle cose
• Sistemi wireless ed RFID
• GRID e Cloud Computing
Negli ultimi anni particolare attenzione e' stata posta all'integrazione del mondo Cyber con quello fisico contribuendo all'estensione di OpenStack verso l'IoT, con la realizzazione del middleware Stack4Things (S4T). S4T e' alla base del progetto #SmartME.

• Project with ST-Microelectronics on “Multimedia Messaging Systems” (2001-2002)
• Project FIRB RBNE019N8N “Valutazione delle prestazioni dei sistemi complessi: tecniche, metodologie e strumenti” (2002-2005)
• Project FIRB “Middleware per servizi evoluti su sistemi distribuiti wired-wireless di grandi dimensioni” (2002-2005)
• Project CNR "Infrastrutture software per reti ad hoc orientate ad ambienti difficili" (2002-2005)
• Project ISID “Incremento della Sicurezza nei Sistemi Informativi Aziendali” (2002-2005)
• Project 297 “Piattaforma mobile a basso consumo per future applicazioni multimediali” 1.5M€ (2005-2007).
• Project TRIGRID “Trinacria GRID Virtual Laboratory” da 3.7M€ (2005-2008), that aims to create an high speed platform in Sicily to develop new services based on the GRID computing paradigm.
• Project “Ponte digitale” 4M€ (2005-2007), to establish a competence center on info-mobility.
• Project PI2S2 “Progetto per l’Implementazione e lo Sviluppo di una e-Infrastruttura in Sicilia basata sul paradigma della grid” 11M€ (2005-2008).
• Project FP7 RESERVOIR 14 M€, that aims to study and develop virtualization techniques to be used in a Cloud environment (2009-2011).
• Project SET “Sistemi di trasporto eco-efficienti” 4M€ financed from the italian Ministry of Finance to study and develop an AVS/AVL system for public transportation (2008-2009).
• Project PRIN08 Cloud@Home financed from italian MIUR to investigate computing systems based on a combination of Cloud and volunteer computing (2010-2011).
• Project FP7 VISION-Cloud 15 M€, that intends to develop new advanced techniques to manage huge amount of data in a Cloud environment (2010-2012).
• Project FP7 COST Euro-TM:Transactional Memories: Foundations, Algorithms, Tools, and Applications (2011-2014) – (Italian in the Management Committee).
• Project POR SIMONE: Cloud-based system for energy monitoring and management (2011-2013).

Member of the general assembly and of the tecnical committee of the RESERVOIR and VSION-Cloud FP7 projects, supported by the European Commission to study and develop new Cloud-based services.

Director of the Center on Information Technology and their Applications (CIA) of Università di Messina (2006-2009).

Technical skills and competences: The following is a list of software tools and products whose development was coordinated that summarize the main technical skills and competences:
• WebSPN: software tool to solve non-Markovian stochastic Petri nets that allows to analytically solve extremely complex performance and dependability models.
• MAP: a Java-based mobile agents platform that provides advanced security mechanisms.
• DAVID: a distributed server to provide video on demand streaming with high performance and limited costs.
• ArgoPerformance: a performance software engineering tool for preventive analysis of UML-based software systems.
• GridVideo: a Grid-based video on demand service.
• WHEREX: middleware to support and implement the Internet of Things (it is now a commercial product of Inquadro srl).
• CLEVER: middleware to setup and manage Cloud computing infrastructures.

The scientific activity is mainly devoted to distributed and parallel systems with specific attention towards performance aspects and reliability analysis, networking and service-oriented architectures. Specific solutions have been developed with regard the management of networked systems and to ensure adequate levels of QoS. User mobility and security in wireless and ad hoc networks are other fields of interest. Grid and Cloud infrastructures have been devoted great attention and specifically on how to develop advanced services to the final users, such as SME and public administration. RFID and wireless technologies in general are another area of interest, where specific product/services have been developed. The research activity covers the following thematic areas:

• Modeling techniques and performance evaluation
• Reliability and falut tolerance
• Multimedia systems
• Wireless and RFID
• GRID and Cloud Computing
